Knoll opens New York flagship showroom on Park Avenue
American design brand Knoll has opened a new flagship showroom on New York's Park Avenue, where metal mesh curtains serve as spatial dividers and backdrops for furniture vignettes.Housed within a corner building at 251 Park Avenue South, in Manhattan's Gramercy Park neighbourhood, the minimalist showroom presents both residential and commercial furniture from the brand's collections. The New York City showroom is a continuation of the brand's recently refreshed retail environments in London, Chicago and Dallas.
It features a flexible layout, which takes cues from historic showrooms designed by Florence Knoll – the wife of founder Hans Knoll, who supervised the design teams for decades and took over as president after her husband's death.
Metal mesh curtains and brightly coloured fabric panels are mounted on a system of perpendicular tracks, so they can be maneuvered and overlaid with one another as desired.
The bold primary hues match the upholstery of Knoll seating designs on display, which include some of the modernist design movement's most recognisable pieces.Amongst the iconic products that populate the space are Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's Barcelona Chair, Marcel Breuer's Wassily Chair and Harry Bertoia's Diamond Chair, which was spotlighted in Dezeen's mid-century modern series last year.
In the area showcasing office furniture, glass-walled compartments emulate individual workspaces and small meeting rooms, while larger conference tables and open-plan arrangements are also presented.
